Methods of Macintosh Remote Control
Written By: Adam Rosen

This series was also published in the Adam's Apple column on Low End Mac

Part 1 - Overview, Remote Desktop and VNC

Remote control of your Macintosh allows you to access a remote computer across a network or the Internet from another local system. Part 1 of this series covers general considerations, Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) and Virtual Network Computing (VNC), methods that will generally work on any version of Mac OS X (Jaguar, Panther, Tiger and Leopard).

Part 2
- LogMeIn, Timbuktu and Rebooting

Part 2 of this Mac Remote Control survey covers LogMeIn, a free web-based solution, and Timbuktu, a paid (and venerable) commercial solution, both of which also support multiple OS versions. Also covered is how to force-reboot a remote Mac when things aren't cooperating.

Part 3
- Leopard Remote Control Options

With the introduction of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, Apple upped the ante on Mac remote control. All of the previously covered methods still work, but part 3 describes new options now exist in the operating system or via associated services: Screen Sharing, Back to My Mac, iChatAV and the Mac OS X Server Admin application.
